GÖWEIL quality certification: technology that delivers what it promises

A practical test was carried out in Austria in the summer of 2024 GOWEIL study on baler-wrappers. Independent Josephinum Research specialists tested G-1 F125 Estate and VARIO-Master V140 balers under real working conditions, assessing baling quality, roll density and productivity.

"Josephinum Research is a central research facility for agricultural machinery based in Wieselburg, Austria. Its activities focus on precision farming, digitalisation and modern measurement technology.

In Austria, where high quality baling and silage production are considered essential, the results of the trials have not only met, but far exceeded expectations.

Preparation and harvesting conditions

Harvest preparation begins 8 July by cutting, using mower with flail mowerto optimise the drying process. The next morning (9 July) is carried out vartymas. The formation of starter meals is carried out four-rotor rakeby forming 130 cm a wide pradal. The average mass of the skein is 2,1 kg SM/m.

Compression testing: process flow and material properties

Alfalfa-dominated alfalfa mix (third atoll), pressed afternoon of 9 July. Material average SM (dry matter) content of 48,6 %, o fibre content - 32,7 % per kg DM - are values specific to large compressible materials. Depending on the set of shredding knives used:

  • Partial knife set: 70 mm chopping length
  • Full set of blades: 35 mm chopping length

For coil tying four layers of net or wide film (0,016 mm) and six layers of wrapping film (0,025 mm).

G-1 F125 Combi baler tests

The test compared four different options

  • V1: partial set of shredding knives, net tying, 7 km/h
  • V2: full set of chopping blades, net tying, 7 km/h.
  • V3: full set of chopping knives, wide film binding, 7 km/h
  • V4: full set of shredding knives, wide film binding, 10 km/h.

G-1 F125 Kombi baler performance review

Roller density and feed quality

Despite the high dry matter and fibre content, the following is achieved 177-185 kg SM/m³ coil density - up to 13 % higher than the Austrian average (164 kg DM/m³). This high level of compaction ensures optimum ensiling conditions, minimises nutrient losses and helps prevent improper fermentation. Butyric acid content: 1,8 g/kg DM - is well below the limit value set by the Austrian Working Group on Grassland and Livestock (ÖAG) (< 3 g/kg DM), which clearly confirms the excellent quality of the silage.

Labour productivity

Depending on the test option, the measured mass flow ranges from 13 t DM/hour to 20.5 t DM/hour Even at higher driving speeds up to 10 km/h., the density of the rolls remains stable. The high mass flow provides the basis for high productivity. Under favourable conditions, high roll densities can be achieved even with a full set of shredding knives, with a collection capacity of up to 14 t DM/hour. Therefore, the potential labour productivity amounts to almost 5 ha/hr. (at 3 t DM/ha), a figure that is higher than that of high-performance short-cut silage collection trailers, and which is difficult to achieve even with well-organised chains of choppers (requiring a gross vehicle weight of at least 14 t).

Rolls shall be marked as soon as they are placed on the ground

Gearing and energy demand

The average power demand on the PTO shaft is 29 to 48 kW, with maximum values of - 66 to 102 kW. Idling power is barely 2,4 kW and is significantly lower than that of variable chamber presses under similar conditions (average 5.64 kW), indicating highly energy-efficient drive.

Specific energy consumption during pressing are very low - 2,21 to 2,77 kWh/t SM. Option 4 (10 km/h and 30 shredding blades) is extremely efficient - 2,33 kWh/t SM - despite a full set of knives and high mass flow. Compared to the variable chamber roller presses, this figure is higher, averaging 2,65 kWh/t SM.
(kWh/t SM - energy required to compact one tonne of dry matter)

Fewer rolls for the same amount of feed means less film, net, labour time, fuel and storage costs. Therefore, a high density of rolls not only increases economic efficiency but also contributes to environmental protection.

Coils are carefully measured and weighed to ensure quality and uniformity

VARIO-Master V140 Bulk Material Baler - premium quality shredded material

Test conditions

Parallel to the G-1 Combi baler test, using VARIO-Master Bulk Material Baler Wrapper, two more variants were tested using the same alfalfa mix and identical harvesting conditions:

  • V5: shredded material (4 mm), wide film binding
  • V6: shredded material (4 mm), netting
VARIO-Master V140 bulk baler outdoor baling

Roller density and feed quality

Both options achieve exceptionally high levels of compression:

  • V5 (wide film binding): > 264 kg SM/m³
  • V6 (netting): ~ 259 kg SM/m³

Despite coarse starting materials with a high dry matter and fibre content, the level of compaction achieved is well above trench silos average (197 kg SM/m³). Although the theoretical shredding length is 4 mm, the analysis of the shredding length shows that only 45 % particles are shorter than 10 mm. This confirms that the actual chopping length differs from the theoretical one, but that this is perfectly normal under real working conditions.

Extremely low butyric acid contentas little as 0,1 g/kg DM (in some cases even below the detection threshold) - demonstrating excellent fermentation conditions. This achieves the optimum silage quality to be achieved, while ensuring maximum suitability for long-term storage.

The crushed alfalfa mixture is pressed into firm rolls

Additional advantages of shredded material

High density of rolls not only saves resources - the film, the network, the opening hours and the storage location, but also increases the efficiency of the feeding process:

  • Easier disassembly of the roll during feeding.
  • Increased feed intake and improved digestibility.
  • Direct increase in profitability throughout the production chain.
All roll dimensions, weights and other parameters are accurately measured

Conclusion

The results of the joint field test show that both G-1 F125 Combined baler-winder, both VARIO-Master V140 Bulk Material Baler Wrapper ensures top-class results in the areas of coil density, feed quality and energy efficiency in different application scenarios. The VARIO-Master excels particularly in the treatment of shredded material, with compaction rates far exceeding even those of trench silos.
